About Me
Welcome! My name is Yelena (she/they) and I am a 23 year old writer, creator, and teacher. I grew up in central New Jersey as a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and as a competitive swimmer, where I spent most of my time in pools and chlorinated water. I found myself in the tiny city of Providence in the tiniest state of Rhode Island, where I called Brown University my home for four years from 2017-2021. When I wasn't doing research in psychology labs, I was involved in volunteer tutoring, mental health advocacy work, and storytelling/writing fellowships. Now, I call Boston, MA my home.
When I'm not helping kids, I'm writing, launching my blog and Youtube channel, crocheting, or soaking in the sun. I love learning new skills, finding hidden gem restaurants, and hiking (my new goal is to visit as many National Parks as I can). But most of all, I can't wait to connect with you, your family, and your child as we embark on a new journey of discovery and growth together.
My Teaching Background
I have always loved working with kids. My first job was as a swim teacher where I led classes for new parents and their toddlers, elementary school kids, and disabled adults, on how to feel comfortable in the water, how to dive, and how to practice safety skills. My favorite part of lessons was learning about each kid - the best parts of their days, the things that excite them, and their most-loved songs as we sang them together when we learned how to kick and float.
I started my tutoring journey in high school as well where I led writing and essay-editing workshops through a club I launched called the Writing Center. Even though I hated waking up early in the mornings, I loved meeting my peers to help them in AP Chemistry, BC Calculus, and other subjects. During my senior year for my Independent Senior Project, I chose to spend my time as a first grade teaching assistant where I made my own lesson plans and led classes in order to compile a binder of all of my students' stories that included their drafts and final essays.
My love for teaching only continued in college where I started working for a tutoring service called GoPeer, clocking in over 10 hours a week, while managing a full course load and extra classes and clubs. To date, on GoPeer alone, I have led over 1,100 hours of lessons with over 50 clients in over 10 subjects. I have even more hours unaccounted for from lessons I have held privately.
My Mission
My goal is to help every student feel empowered and confident in themselves, so that they can enjoy the journey of learning. I have experience working with students who have learning differences and disabilities, so my teaching approach is always student-centered, where I do my best to incorporate various learning methods that encourage accessibility, creativity, imagination, and self-expression.
I believe learning is community based, so I make it my goal to be in constant communication with parents/guardians regularly to not only update them on student progress, but to also brainstorm sustainable ways where learning can continue outside of scheduled class time.
I am excited to meet you and your student so we can come up with the best plan to move forward. Feedback is crucial to my teaching philosophy, so as we spend more time together, our lesson plans will change to reflect your child's needs so that they can receive the proper support to succeed.
